Addressing Gender & Livelihood Issues in Dalit Land Rights Movement in Marathwada

Land Based Livelihood Promotion Program for the Most Marginalized- (2003-2007) :

This program was taken up for ensuring sustainable livelihoods to the dalits, tribal and marginal farmers practicing rainfed agriculture in stress prone ecologies of the state.

The program has covered more than 1000 rainfed marginal farmers from 12 villages of Nandurbar, Dhule & Solapur districts of the state. Department of Science and Technology, GoI, Dorabji Tata Trust, Mumbai, AWO International, Germany has financially supported the said program.

The main activities of the said program were :

In- situ soil moisture conservation & Rain Water harvesting.

Promotion of Low External Input Sustainable     Agriculture methods (LEISA) with en emphasis on     Organic farming, integrated pest     management,enhancement of soil quality through     Green Mannureing, Vermi Composting.

Promotion of alternate land use systems for     converting un productive marginalized land in to     better productive asset.

Training and education of the farmers through the     extension services.

Community-based activities like formation and empowering of the “Shetkari Vigyan Mandal’,     SHG’s, Community Grain banks, Agricultural Implements Service Centers.

Credit support through revolving fund, Linkages with FFI & convergence of govt.schemes.

Livestock based economic activities like dairy, goatry, poultry with appropriate technical &
   credit backup support to the needy households.
