ICT related projects of AFARM

Tele-Monitoring System :
Twelve NGOs implimenting watershed development project in various districts of  Maharashtra were participated in this project. The idea was to connect all these agencies with dial-up network having central server at Pune. Each agency was given computer modem set alongwith customised software to send receive update various progrss reports and
records of the project. This was the first dial up network of NGOs having periphery of 800 km spread throught 6 districts of Maharashtra.  System is being utilized for monitor, communicate and  co-ordinate the project. This pilot project has proved it's technical as well as operating feasibility to replicate with similar kind of projects.

Web-site Development - www.afarm.org :
When various commercial organisations were up to making their profits double with the help of Internet, AFARM entered into the field with strong commitment towards dissimination of information of valuntary efforts in Maharashtra. AFARM created the first collective web-site of Maharastrian NGOs.  This web site contains information about status and works of organisations. User can brows information about 115 NGOs by their work area and beneficiary group.

NICnet :
AFARM was given Internet & NICnet connectivity from Planning Commission of India to enable AFARM's network of NGOs with Information resources. AFARM was the first NGOs to receive this facility at it's campus. Many development workers and organisations are utilizing this facility at AFARM.

Info-Letter - Mahiti Wahini :
By this time AFARM gathered many information resources like Internet, NICnet, various periodicals,  international information services, News groups etc. Now it was decided to give this resources a  human face. Through various techniques,  the information need of common worker and organisation at grass root  level was analysed. Monthly info-letter in Marathi was decided as a media to dessiminate this valueable information. The response, this 4 page news letter is getting is really amazing.

Training/Guidance :
AFARM always extended it's support to many NGOs who are in need of technical guidance regarding Information communication technology. Various social workers were given operational training of the systems related to their respective projects.

Other services :
Over the last decade AFARM has developed infrastructure (and also temprament) for communication and IT based services. AFARM has now opened it's it's services like E-mail, Internet browsing, DTP etc for those who wants to use this for development work.

IT Centres :
We are entering into  the IT based society in 21st century. Considering the need of Computer literacy in rural India. AFARM has come out with a concept of IT centre in village. This centre will be utilised for education of NGO workers, women and students. Machines will be made available for this by various industries, financial institutions affected by Y2K problem. AFARM on its own has dedicated few machines for IT centres. Atleat at four villages in Maharashtra these IT centres will start its primary functioning.

Virtual Training Programs:
Multi Media technique has great potential to translet any concept in lucid universal format for understanding. People who are engaged in training rural grass root workers, are aware of diffuculties they face for it. Multimedia can contribute greatly in this area with it's tools like animation, graphics to make things understandable to the group having no common background. AFARM has developed ability to convert any training programme into virtual programme on paper.
 

AFARMnet :
AFARM is playing a role of Network agency in Maharashtra for last three decades. In the next millenium it has decided to bring  this network on-line. Every transaction and the support will be given over the PC based Communcation network. With the help of district VSNL connectivity this network will communcate and share information not only with NGOs in Maharashtra but Internationally as well.
